England vacations seem to be increasingly popular this year, most likely due to the present depression and the weak pound Sterling. England has a large selection of top tourist destinations including London (the English capital) and other interesting cities plus a fine selection of seaside resorts such as; Blackpool, Brighton, Bournemouth and Bognor Regis. One place often overlooked is Plymouth in the south of England.

First appearances are that Plymouth appears rather bland and principally modern, but looking a little bit deeper and you will soon find that the city of Plymouth has a rich history and a deep association with the sea. As long ago as the sixteenth century there has been a port in the town. In 1588 Sir Francis Drake embarked from the port at Plymouth to attack and defeat the Spanish Armada. Another historic moment occurred in sixteen twenty when the Pilgrim Fathers embarked from the port.

A century worth of human innovation including the industrial revolution can wreck havoc to any environment that it comes into contact with. Climate change is a hot topic along with its effects. The Great Lakes and global warming is a situation that will significantly change an entire region.

Global warming is not the only threat to this particular region. It is already dealing with a number if invasive species overtaking native species and altering the ecosystem. Climate change is another issue that will inform any regional policies. One of the most important roles for the region is as the producer of twenty percent of the entire planet’s fresh water.

Spending time talking about how important the Great Lakes are cannot be cast aside. Drinking water, as important and essential it is, is not the only thing the lakes provide. The region gives a huge amount of hydroelectric power to surrounding areas and is a main waterway for shipping routes. In terms of nature, it is a hub for a number of plant and animal species.

With all of these positives, there is a flipside to use and land development including air and water pollution and urban encroachment into habitats. Because of these issues, the region is more susceptible to being affected by global warming. Something as innocuous as climate change can reap disastrous results.

Increasing temperature will melt the ice cover that, at this point, is already quite thin along the lakes. No cover will increase the overall evaporation of the lakes and decrease overall water levels.

Water loss has already been occurring and it was found last year the Lake Superior’s levels were at their lowest in seventy seven years. If the lakes decrease by the purported additional meter in the future, shipping routes will be severely disrupted and the water itself will diminish in quality due to the concentration of pollutants. The travel industry such as cruises will also be negatively affected.

Efforts are underway to restore the Great Lakes with billions of dollars needed to update the antique sewage systems as well as cleaning up the polluted sediment that already exists. Building up the wetland environments at the edges of the lakes will create a natural water cleanser and impediment to invasive species.

There are more repercussions from climate change other than decreasing water levels and that includes an increase in the number and ferocity of storms and drought periods. In response to these weather extremes viral transmissions can increase and pollution runoff may be increased. Within the lakes there may be more dead zones, places where there is no oxygen because of algae overgrowth.

By the end of this current century it is believed that the temperature of the great lakes region will increase by two to four degrees, with precipitation increasing by 25%. Lake levels are predicted to fall anywhere from 1.5 to 8 feet.

The future may seem to hold a number of destructive elements, but they can be tempered by being proactive in the present and working to make the Great Lakes as great as they once were.

If you are thinking of visiting Rome, make sure to include in your schedule a trip to the catacombs. They are open throughout the year, with the exception of three holidays: Christmas, Easter, and New Year’s Day. There are five Roman catacombs that you can visit. The largest and most famous of them all is the catacomb of St. Callistus (sometimes spelled Callixtus). Each of the five catacombs is closed one day each week for cleaning and maintenance. When one of them is closed, the other four catacombs remain open. The catacomb of St. Callistus is closed on Wednesdays.

What Are the Catacombs?

The catacombs are the underground cemeteries of the early Christians of Rome. Contrary to popular belief, the early Christians did not hide in the catacombs or hold their services there. Most of the catacombs are situated outside of the city walls of ancient Rome, parts of which walls are still standing.

The catacombs were formed by the early Christians digging out a very soft, permeable rock called tuffa. Before it is open to the elements, tuffa rock is very malleable and quite simple to dig out with mere hand tools. Yet, after tuffa has been exposed to air, it hardens over a period of time. That is why the tunnels the early Christians dug out of the tuffa rock became hard instead of crumbling.

Why Are They Called Catacombs?

From where did the term “catacombs” come? In the beginning, it was merely a geographic word of identification. It had nothing to do with the early Christian burial sites. Early Roman maps bore the description, “ad catacumbas,” for a region of land near the Appian Way where the ground sank down and there was a large hollow. Ad catacumbas is merely Latin for “near the hollow.” The name for the area was there long before the Christians created their subterranean tombs there.

During the fourth and fifth centuries A.D., numerous Christian pilgrims traveled to Rome in order to visit the famous underground burial caverns there. They not only visited the underground cemetery of Saint Callistus, but also a nearby one named after Saint Sebastian. The local Christians of Rome prepared maps and guides for the many pilgrims.

In these maps, the Sebastian cemetery was given this name: Cymiterium Catacumbas ad sanctum Sebastianum via Appia. This appellation was merely providing the location of the cemetery of St. Sebastian. The maps were saying that his cemetery was located in the catacumbas region along the Appian Way.

However, during the early medieval period, people started calling all of the underground burial chambers the “catacombs.” This was simply through ignorance. Yet, the name stuck, and that’s why they are still known as the catacombs.

How the Catacombs Were Forgotten and Rediscovered

After the year 1200, fewer and fewer pilgrims came to visit the catacombs. Eventually, the local Roman Christians quit giving tours of the catacombs, and these underground cemeteries were forgotten. The entrances to some of the catacombs were covered by rock slides. Shrubs and trees covered the entrances of the other ones. Eventually the time came when nobody could remember where the various entrances to the catacombs were located. And so the catacombs passed into oblivion.

In the year 1849, John Rossi, a young Italian archaeologist, was looking for ancient Christian artifacts in the area of the Appian Way. On one of his expeditions, he was searching in a vineyard located outside the walls of ancient Rome. Suddenly he noticed a piece of broken marble. He picked up the piece and examined it.

He saw that the marble fragment had a Latin inscription on it, although part of the inscription was missing. Nevertheless the remnant that was left read: …nelius martyr. He thought about it for several days, and then he made an intelligent deduction. Perhaps the marble was from the tomb of the ancient martyr, Cornelius. Cornelius had served as the bishop of Rome in the mid-200s, and he was put to death in A.D. 253. Rossi knew that Cornelius had been buried somewhere near the Appian Way.

Naturally, Rossi was happy that he had perhaps discovered the tomb of this ancient bishop. However, there was something far more exciting. Rossi had studied ancient records, and he knew that Cornelius had been buried adjacent to the early Christian subterranean burial chamber that medieval Christians called the “catacomb of St. Callistus.”

Could this be the key to finding one of the long lost catacombs? Rossi hurriedly told the Vatican about his surmise that the catacomb of Saint Callistus lay beneath the vineyard where he had been searching. Based upon his recommendation, the papal office purchased the vineyard, and then commissioned Rossi to begin excavating the site. The archaeological excavation soon proved Rossi to be correct, and the catacomb of Saint Callistus was uncovered. After that, archaeologists began searching for the other catacombs and eventually discovered four more of them.

On a recent vacation in Rome, the author visited the catacombs and other sights associated with the early Christians. He is an avid photographer and took many pictures of ancient Roman ruins while he was there.

With this Houston Attraction are included around four hundred varieties of marine life. Is it possible to even picture this? Your eyes are going to be filled with wonder and awe when you behold fishes and other sea creatures you may have not seen before.

So if you plan to go to Houston, then these tourist attractions are all yours. Especially the Houston Aquarium (that really jump out of all of the rest of Houston Attractions), it will without a doubt give your memory something worthwhile to remember. Louisiana is called the “Festival State” by many people in the United States. Festivals are a year round occurrence here in Louisiana but spring offers the biggest selection. We always have something to celebrate down here in bayou country so if you like a good party this is where it is happening. The Audubon Zoo plays host to quite a few festivals themselves. Soul Fest was held on the Zoo grounds last weekend. A colorful celebration of African-American culture, New Orleans Creole cuisine and soul food mixed with R&B and hip hop kicked off a round of happenings at NOLA’s own “animal house”, the Audubon Zoo.

Everybody loves the Zoo and obviously some are better than others. In my child accompanied travels across the country I have been to my fair share of Zoo’s and believe me when I say Audubon Zoo out classes them all. The Audubon Zoo provides amble natural habit for all of the animals that are housed there. There is also areas of grass and shade for visitors to enjoy. Not only is the Zoo itself beautifully done but it definitely does its part to promote Louisiana and all we have to offer.

Coming fast and furious right behind Soul Fest is Earth Fest, Asian Pacific American Society and then immediately after those are the popular fund raisers for the Audubon Society, the Whitney Zoo To Do and Zoo To Do for Kids sponsored by Humana. These fundraisers will help The Audubon Institute underwrite a new attraction for our favorite Zoo called Cool Zoo, an animal themed splash park designed especially with the kiddos in mind. Cool Stuff! With the hot Louisiana summer getting closer by the minute this is welcome news.

Cool Zoo is a new wet and wild splash park right at the Zoo. Highlights include jumping water spouts, a huge alligator (we are in Louisiana after all) water slide, a spider monkey soaker and water spitting snakes just to name a few! The splash park will offer three different splash zones with one specifically for toddlers and younger zoo goers. Don’t forget to pack that extra change of clothes or at least put a swimsuit and towel in the bag before you leave home!

Besides the numerous custom animal features in the new Cool Zoo, there will be animal sounds in the “Sound Spray” area. When the water sprays you hear matching animal sounds like croaks, bleats, roars or squawks. The children will love the sounds of nature. This new hot spot will be located between the Endangered Species Carousel and the Embraceable Zoo. Construction should begin soon. So get ready for some Cool Zoo fun. The Caterpillar sprayer is designed to look like a monarch butterfly and the giant alligator’s tail is the waterslide!

Another drawing card for the Big Easy will be an 800 square foot tropical environment and home to more than 1,000 free flying parakeets! Scheduled to open this summer is Parakeet Pointe which will be located at the Aquarium of the Americas, For an even closer encounter, purchase a feed stick for a dollar and feed the bright beautiful little birds. The kids and you kid-like adults will love it! These guys are all naturally curious and playful. There is always something going on in the Crescent City, old and new. To the west is the Pacific Ocean, the north is the Caribbean and the east is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean. Separating South America at Colombia from North America is the Isthmus of Panama. The southernmost point of South America is Cape Horn in Chile and is home to the Straits of Magellan, some of the world’s most turbulent seaway.

Population as of 2005, the continent had a total population of 371 million people placing it fifth in world population behind the continents of Asia, Africa, Europe, and North America. The largest city is Sao Paulo, located in Brazil, the city has an estimated population of 20 million people followed by Buenos Aires population of 13 million.

South America’s two main languages are Spanish and Portuguese making up 90% with the other 10% coming from French, Quechua, Aymara, English and German. Brazil is home to 50% of South America’s 13 county population.

The roots of the renaissance movement were founded in Florence in Italy. The renaissance, that literally means ‘rebirth’, came about in Italy during the 15th century when several artists thought that art, culture, architecture and Italian Civilisation had declined during the middle ages and through the renaissance tried to revive the glories and developments of art from Roman Italy.

Filippo Brunelleschi takes the credit for having fuelled the Art Renaissance Movement in Italy although he is not the most famous name connected with it. He was an architect by profession and was responsible for laying down the scientific laws of perspective based on which the Renaissance Art in Italy flowered later.

Excepting Giotto di Bondone who was an influential member of the Christian art movement in Italy during the 13th century, art from Italy had always been two dimensional.

Renaissance art in Italy rose to prominence as a result of the implementation of the laws of perspective which the artists followed to progress towards development. Slowly renaissance art in Italy began to create pieces that reflected scenic nature and the real world to perfection.

Renaissance Art in Italy widened the area of art while art in the country at the time of ancient Rome was a mere tool of the state dealing with religious matters under the headship of the Catholic Church. Artists focussed more on nature and the world around them in their art, even though the onus was on religious themes at that time.

In this time anatomy became the forte of numerous renaissance artists in Italy and so human form was delineated to nicety by them in their work. The statue of St. George in Italy, a magnum opus of Donatello is a sample of renaissance art in Italy.

The 16th century is considered to be the pinnacle of the renaissance in Italy. Italy was awash with artists of such outstanding quality, whose likes have never been seen since. Raphael, Michelangelo and De Vinci are three such figures from the renaissance art movement in Italy who were all contemporaries of each other.

Renaissance artists from Italy attained priority gradually and were always favoured by the state-heads all around the country to produce wonderful work in their respective states.

Art in Italy began to grow non-religious in the sense that religious heads no longer exercised control over the artists but still Italian artists with Christian attitude could still be found in Italy. Giacomo Manza signed in the field of Christian sculpture and his depiction of the bronze door of St. Peter’s Basilica is an evidence of art works with religious themes in Italy.
